It is soundly reported from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—(1)(2). [As for reciting the talbiyah during his standing at ʿArafat or at Muzdalifah, no such report has been transmitted from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—(3)](4). It is likewise related from the Rightly Guided Caliphs and others that they would not (5) recite the talbiyah at ʿArafat (6).
(1) As related by Ibn Abbas: the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had al-Fadl ride behind him, and al-Fadl reported that “the Messenger of Allah continued to recite the talbiyah until he cast the Jamrah.” Recorded by al-Bukhari, no. 1685, and Muslim, no. 1282.
As for reciting the talbiyah on the way from Mina to Arafah, al-Bukhari, no. 970, and Muslim, no. 1285, transmit from Muhammad b. Abi Bakr al-Thaqafi that he asked Anas b. Malik, while both were travelling from Mina to Arafah, “How did you act on this day with the Messenger of Allah?” Anas replied, “Some of us entered the state of ihram (ihram) and were not reproached, and some of us proclaimed ‘Allahu akbar’ and were not reproached.”
(2) The word “section” (fasl) is added in manuscripts C and D.
(3) Yet al-Tabarani in al-Awsat, no. 5419, and al-Hakim, no. 1707—who declared it authentic, a judgment endorsed by al-Dhahabi—narrate from Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah stood at Arafah; when he said, “Labbayka Allahumma labbayk,” he added, “True goodness is the goodness of the Hereafter.” Al-Albani graded the report sound in al-Sahihah, 5/180. Muslim, no. 1283, also relates from Abd al-Rahman b. Yazid and al-Aswad b. Yazid that they heard Abd Allah b. Masud at Jam‘ (Muzdalifah) say, “I heard the one upon whom Surat al-Baqarah was revealed at this spot saying, ‘Labbayka Allahumma labbayk’,” whereupon he himself began the talbiyah and we joined him.
(4) The text enclosed in brackets is absent from manuscript B.
(5) The word “la” (not) is omitted in manuscript B.
(6) Ibn Abd al-Barr, in al-Tamhid 13/77, transmits with his chain from the judge Ismail that Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri said: “The leading imams used to end the talbiyah when the sun passed its zenith on the Day of Arafah,” and Ibn Shihab named Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Aishah, and Sa id b. al-Musayyib among them.
