may hasten from Muzdalifah to Mina once the moon has set, whereas those who are strong should not depart from Muzdalifah until dawn breaks. They should then perform the dawn prayer there and remain standing in supplication there (1).

All of Muzdalifah is a valid place of standing, yet standing at Quzah (2) is preferable. Quzah is the mountain of al-Miqada (3), the very spot where people stand today (4), and a structure has since been erected over it (5) (6). This is the site that many jurists designate as al-Mashʿar al-Ḥarām.

When it is shortly before sunrise, one proceeds from Muzdalifah to Mina; then, when

(1) The word “biha” (there) is missing in manuscript A, and the phrase “wa-yaqifu biha” (and they halt there) is missing in B. (2) Manuscript B reads “burj” (tower). Qazah—also called al-Mashar al-Haram (the sacred landmark)—is a hill in Muzdalifah on which a mosque now stands; see al-Mutali, p. 234; al-Sharh al-Mumti, 7/312. (3) All extant manuscripts give “al-muqayyada,” but the correct reading is “al-miqada.” Shaykh al-Islam states in Sharh al-Umda (5/254): “The hill at which it is recommended to pause in Muzdalifah has three names: Qazah, al-Mashar al-Haram, and al-Miqada.” Yaqut, Mu jam al-Buldan (4/341) notes about Qazah: “It is the peak where the imam stands in Muzdalifah, to his right; it is al-Miqada, the spot where fires were lit in the pre-Islamic period, and it was the station of Quraysh in the Jahiliyyah, for they did not stand at Arafah.” (4) Manuscripts A and B read: “people stand there today.” (5) Manuscripts C and D include the particle “qad” (indeed). (6) Manuscript A reads: “alayha” (on it).
