2 – “For every community there is a direction to which it turns; so compete with one another in good works. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you all together. Indeed, Allah is powerful over all things.” ⦗al-Baqarah 148⦘
• After Allah, exalted is He, commanded His Messenger in particular—and the believers in general—to face His Sacred House, He made it clear that every religion has a qiblah toward which its adherents turn in worship. Yet the true issue is not the physical orientations or specific directions, for these belong to the rulings that vary with the passage of time and can be transferred or abrogated. The real concern—indeed the entire concern—is to obey Allah unconditionally, draw near to Him, and seek closeness in His sight. This is the hallmark of felicity and the emblem of divine friendship. When souls lack it they incur loss in this life and the next, and when they possess it they are the genuinely successful. All revealed laws agree on this point, and for this purpose Allah created His creatures and commanded them.
• The instruction to “race toward good deeds” conveys more than a bare command to perform them. Racing implies doing them, perfecting them, carrying them out in the most complete manner, and hastening to them. Whoever outruns others in good works in this world will be the forerunner to the gardens in the Hereafter, and the forerunners are the highest of creation in rank.
• The term “good deeds” encompasses every obligatory and voluntary act: prayer, fasting, zakat, charity, ḥajj, ʿumrah, jihad, and every benefit—whether it reaches others or is confined to oneself.
Thus, this verse urges the fulfillment of everything that rounds out these acts of worship: every pillar, obligation, condition, recommended deed, supplement, and completion, outward and inward—such as hastening to perform the act at the beginning of its time, observing the complementary sunnah practices, rushing to discharge all duties owed, and observing every etiquette connected to worship.
By Allah, how comprehensive and beneficial this verse is!
