14 – “To Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and the earth, and those who are with Him are never too proud to worship Him, nor do they grow weary. They glorify Him night and day; they never flag.” ⦗Al-Anbiyāʾ 19–20⦘
• Belief in the angels is one of the pillars of faith; faith in Allah, His Books, and His Messengers is not complete without it. Allah has portrayed the angels with the most perfect qualities: they possess tremendous strength for worshipping Him and an intense longing to do so. “They glorify Him night and day without ever tiring,” and, “They are not too proud to worship Him.” Indeed, they regard worship as one of His greatest favors upon them. He also says, “They do not disobey Allah in what He commands them; they do whatever they are commanded.” ⦗At-Taḥrīm 6⦘
• These texts show the perfection of their love for their Lord, the strength of their turning to Him, and their complete vigor in obeying Him—they never disobey Him for even the blink of an eye. They are the intermediaries between Allah and His messengers—above all Gabriel, the best, greatest, strongest, and most honored of them before Allah. Concerning him Allah says, “Possessed of might, established near the Lord of the Throne, obeyed there, trustworthy” ⦗At-Takwīr 20–21⦘; “and he is not withholding concerning the Unseen” ⦗At-Takwīr 24⦘; and, “Indeed, this is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds, brought down by the faithful Spirit upon your heart so that you may be one of the warners.” ⦗Ash-Shuʿarāʾ 192–194⦘
• Just as they serve as intermediaries in conveying revelation and the divine law to the prophets, they are also intermediaries in administering the decreed affairs, for Allah has described them as “those who direct the command.” ⦗An-Nāziʿāt 5⦘ Each company of them has been entrusted with a specific task that it performs by Allah’s permission:
– among them are those charged with rain and vegetation;
– those charged with guarding people from harm and with recording and preserving their deeds.
