The furthest a weak servant can reach is that Allah has made him but one small link in the chain of causes through which these momentous realities have come to be. This in itself points to Allah’s mercy and His attentive care for His creatures, and it summons all people to worship Him alone, without partner, and to turn back to Him in every circumstance.
- “And what Allah has sent down from the sky of water” — that is the rain that falls from the clouds;
- “and by it He revived the earth after its death,” so that it brings forth every kind of provision and countless varieties of trees and plants, without which human beings could not survive.
Is this not a conclusive proof of the power of the One who sent the rain, of the mercy and kindness He shows His servants, and of the creation’s utter dependence on Him in all their affairs? Does it not urge them to devote their worship purely to Him, to return to Him, and to fulfill His servitude both outwardly and inwardly?
It is also a sign that Allah will bring the dead to life, as He, the Exalted, says: “And among His signs is that you see the earth humbled; then, when We send down water upon it, it quivers and swells. Indeed, He who revived it is surely the One who will give life to the dead; truly, He is powerful over all things” (Fussilat 41:39).
Allah repeats this proof of resurrection in many verses, just as He cites the beginning of creation as evidence that He can bring it back again. He points to the perfection of His knowledge and power, to His creation of the heavens and the earth, and to His bringing forth fire for people from the green tree — all of them clear demonstrations that the Resurrection is certain.
- His words, “and He scattered in it every kind of creature,” mean that He spread throughout the earth a great variety of living beings and subjected them to humankind, who benefit from them in many ways. Yet He is the One who sustains them and guarantees their provisions, for “there is no creature on earth but that its provision rests upon Allah; He knows its dwelling place and its temporary repository” (Hud 11:6).
