Taysir al-Latif al-Mannan fi Khulasat Tafsir al-QuranAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

• Also included is the kind of deed that, once a servant undertakes it, many others participate in it and follow his example.

• Likewise, when the deed itself carries tremendous weight and far-reaching benefit—such as rescuing those in desperate need or relieving the anguish of the distressed—then consider how often an act of this sort has led Allah to wipe out all of a servant’s sins and usher him into His good pleasure. The story of the prostitute who drew water for a dog about to die of thirst bears witness to this.

• Another factor is the elevated standing of the doer in Allah’s sight and the loftiness of his or her rank, as in His words: “O wives of the Prophet, you are not like any other women—provided you remain mindful” (Al-Ahzab 33:32), and His statement just before that: “Whoever among you devoutly obeys Allah and His Messenger and does righteous work, We shall grant her her reward twice over” (Al-Ahzab 33:31).

• Yet another cause is giving charity from wholesome earnings and with powerful sincerity.

• A further cause is performing the deed in a blessed time or a blessed place.

• Among the greatest and most decisive causes of multiplied reward is realizing the station of ihsan (spiritual excellence) while discharging one’s servitude to Allah. The hadith states, “You will receive from your prayer only what you are conscious of in it.” (1) When prayer, recitation, remembrance, and other acts of worship are carried out with full presence of heart and complete faith, the degrees separating them from the worship of the heedless are so high that the necks of riding beasts would break before reaching them.

The causes for multiplied reward are many, but we have merely pointed out the principal ones.

It is virtually agreed upon among the godly scholars that maintaining, at all times, deep sincerity toward Allah, sincere counsel for His servants, love of good for the Muslims, and constant engagement in Allah’s remembrance—nothing in the realm of deeds can match these. Their practitioners outstrip everyone in every virtue, reward, and recompense, and all other works trail behind them; the people of

(1) I have not found this report transmitted as marfu (attributed) to the Prophet. Yet Abu Dawud records it in his Sunan (no. 796) as marfu: “A man may finish the prayer and only a tenth of it is written for him, or a ninth, an eighth, a seventh, a sixth, a fifth, a quarter, a third, or a half.”
