And His pronouncement, “He does not love those who are extravagant” ⦗al-Anʿām 6:141⦘, is proof that He loves those who are moderate. Thus this verse affirms the attribute of love for Allah and shows that His love is directed toward every person, deed, and condition that He approves. Glory be to the One who has made His Book a trove of varied, beneficial sciences!
- Benefit: In several passages of the Quran Allah describes hearts as diseased, blind, hard, covered with rust, wrapped in veils and barriers, dead, or bewildered. Know, then, that a heart may be sound or diseased, and that disease may coexist with impediments that block the arrival of health. A heart may also be soft or hard.
• The sound heart is free of all these afflictions. Its cognitive power and its volitional, practical power are both sound and strong. It recognizes the truth and follows it without hesitation, and it recognizes falsehood and shuns it without delay. This is the living, healthy, sound heart; its owner is among the people of reason, understanding, and insight—humble before Allah and constantly turning back to Him.
• The diseased heart is one in which either of its two powers—cognitive or practical—or both of them have deviated:
– The sickness of doubts and specious arguments, which is the sickness of the hypocrites: because their knowledge became distorted and their hearts remained in doubt and turmoil, failing to incline toward what is good, the disease proved fatal. (1)
