Thus, that utterance of his in such circumstances was itself one of Allah’s signs, a conclusive proof of his mission, and evidence that he was a servant of Allah—contrary to what the Christians later alleged. By it, his mother obtained a sweeping vindication from every suspicion of wrongdoing; for had she produced a thousand witnesses to her innocence while in that situation, the people would still not have believed her. Yet this speech of Jesus from the cradle dispelled every doubt that might have lodged in their hearts.
People thereafter divided concerning him into three groups:
• A group who believed in him, affirmed the truth of his words, and submitted to him once he was commissioned as a prophet—these are the truly faithful.
• A group who went to excess, namely the Christians, adopting the familiar doctrines about him and exalting him to the rank of divinity. Exalted is Allah far above what they say!
• A group who denied him and treated him with hostility, namely the Jews, and who accused his mother of the very thing from which Allah had declared her innocent.
For this reason Allah says: “But the factions differed among themselves; so woe to those who disbelieve when they witness the Great Day” (Q 19:37).
When Allah sent him to the Children of Israel, some believed while others disbelieved. He displayed to them signs and wonders: he fashioned a bird from clay, then breathed into it and it became a living bird by Allah’s leave; he healed those born blind and the lepers; he revived the dead by Allah’s leave; and he told them much of what they ate and what they stored in their homes.
Despite all this, his enemies closed in on him and plotted to kill him. Allah cast his likeness onto one of the disciples—or onto someone else—and raised Jesus up to Himself, freeing him from their reach. They seized the look-alike, killed him, and crucified him, thereby bearing an enormous sin and grievous crime. The Christians accepted their claim that they had killed and crucified him, whereas Allah exonerated him from that, saying: “They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but it was made to appear so to them” (Q 4:157).
