• Another lesson: When speaking to kings and leaders—inviting them to the truth and admonishing them—the required approach is gentleness and soft speech that conveys the message clearly, without confusion or harshness. This is needed in every situation, but here it is paramount, for it is the very means to the intended end, as indicated by His words, “so that he might take heed or feel awe” (Taha 44).

• Another lesson: Whoever is engaged in obedience to Allah, seeking His help, trusting in His promise, and hoping for His reward, Allah is with him; and when Allah is with someone, he has nothing to fear. The Almighty said, “Do not be afraid” (Taha 46), and then gave the reason: “Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see.” He also said, “When he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us’ ” (Tawbah 40).

• Another lesson: The causes of punishment are confined to two traits: “It has been revealed to us that punishment is for the one who denies and turns away” (Taha 48)—that is, he who denies Allah’s message and the message of His messengers, and turns away from obeying Allah and His messengers. A parallel text is: “None will burn in it except the most wretched—he who denied and turned away” (Al-Layl 15–16).

• Another lesson: In His words, “Yet I am truly All-Forgiving to anyone who repents, believes, does righteous deeds, and then remains guided” (Taha 82), Allah has encompassed all the means by which His forgiveness is obtained:
• The first is repentance: turning back from what Allah dislikes, outwardly and inwardly, to what Allah loves, outwardly and inwardly. Repentance erases whatever sins preceded it, whether minor or major.
• The second is faith: firm, comprehensive acknowledgment and conviction regarding everything that Allah and His Messenger have conveyed, which necessitates deeds of the heart and is followed by the actions of the limbs.
There is no doubt that the faith nestled in the heart—faith in Allah, His Books, His messengers, and the Last Day, about which there can be no doubt—is the root, the greatest part, and the foundation of all obedience; and there is no doubt that, in proportion to its strength, it repels

* ومنها: أنَّ الذي ينبغِي في مخاطبةِ الملوكِ والرؤساءِ ودعوتِهم وموعظتِهم: الرفقُ والكلامُ اللينُ الذي يحصلُ بهِ الإفهامُ، بلا تشويشٍ ولا غلظةٍ، وهذا يُحتاجُ إليهِ في كلِّ مقامٍ، لكنَّ هذا أهمُّ المواضعِ؛ وذلكَ لأنهُ الذي يحصلُ بهِ الغرضُ المقصودُ، وهوَ قولهُ: ﴿لَعَلَّهُ يَتَذَكَّرُ أَوْ يَخْشَى﴾ [طه: ٤٤]. * ومنها: أنَّ مَنْ كان في طاعةِ اللهِ، مستعينًا باللهِ، واثقًا بوعدِ اللهِ، راجيًا ثوابَ اللهِ؛ فإنَّ اللهَ معَهُ، ومَن كان اللهُ معَهُ فلا خوفَ عليهِ؛ لقولهِ تعالى: ﴿لَا تَخَافَا﴾ [طه: ٤٦]، ثم علَّلَهُ بقولهِ: ﴿إِنَّنِي مَعَكُمَا أَسْمَعُ وَأَرَى﴾، وقالَ تعالى: ﴿إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا﴾ [التوبة: ٤٠]. * ومنها: أنَّ أسبابَ العذابِ منحصرةٌ في هذينِ الوصفينِ: ﴿إِنَّا قَدْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيْنَا أَنَّ الْعَذَابَ عَلَى مَنْ كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّى﴾ [طه: ٤٨] أي: كذَّبَ خبرَ اللهِ وخبرَ رسلهِ، وتولَّى عن طاعةِ اللهِ وطاعةِ رسلهِ، ونظيرُها قولهُ تعالى: ﴿لَا يَصْلَاهَا إِلَّا الْأَشْقَى (١٥) الَّذِي كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّى (١٦)﴾ [الليل: ١٥ - ١٦]. * ومنها: أنَّ قولَهُ تعالى: ﴿وَإِنِّي لَغَفَّارٌ لِمَنْ تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا ثُمَّ اهْتَدَى﴾ [طه: ٨٢] استوعبَ اللهُ بها الأسبابَ التي تُدرَكُ بها مغفرةُ اللهِ: • أحدُها: التوبةُ، وهوَ الرجوعُ عما يكرههُ اللهُ ظاهرًا وباطنًا، إلى ما يحبُّهُ اللهُ ظاهرًا وباطنًا، وهيَ تَجُبُّ ما قبلَها من الذنوبِ صغارِها وكبارِها. • الثاني: الإيمانُ، وهوَ الإقرارُ والتصديقُ الجازمُ العامُّ بكلِّ ما أخبرَ اللهُ بهِ ورسولهُ، الموجبُ لأعمالِ القلوبِ، ثم تتبعُها أعمالُ الجوارحِ. ولا ريبَ أنَّ ما في القلبِ من الإيمانِ باللهِ، وكتبهِ، ورسلهِ، واليومِ الآخرِ الذي لا ريبَ فيه؛ أصلُ الطاعاتِ وأكبرُها وأساسُها، ولا ريبَ أنهُ بحسبِ قوتهِ يدفعُ
