• Another benefit is that, in His wisdom, Allah relates to us the stories of the nations that lived near us—in the Arabian Peninsula and its surroundings—because the Qur’an employs the most elevated methods of admonition and Allah has set forth its reminders in ways that truly profit. There is no doubt that the far-flung regions of the East and West also received messengers from Allah, and that their peoples responded to those messengers with the same acceptance and rejection, honor and punishment, that befell the nations specifically mentioned in the Qur’an.
• Allah has sent a messenger to every nation, yet what benefits us most is to be reminded of the peoples who lived close by, whose accounts we have transmitted generation after generation, whose ruins we still see, whose dwellings we pass every day, whose languages we understand, and whose temperaments are akin to ours. Such reminders are unquestionably more useful than speaking of nations we have never heard of, whose tongues we do not know, and whose reports do not reach us in a form that corresponds to what Allah tells us.
• From this we learn that reminding people with what lies nearest to their minds, best suits their circumstances, most readily enters their understanding, and brings them the greatest benefit is preferable to other kinds of reminders—even when those others are true—for truths differ in their impact.
• When the preacher or teacher follows this path, striving to convey knowledge and goodness through means the people grasp and do not find off-putting, or that are more conducive to establishing the proof against them, he both benefits others and benefits himself.
• The Creator alluded to this at the end of the story of ʿĀd: “We have already destroyed the towns that surrounded you and diversified the signs so that they might return” (46:27). In other words, We presented those signs in every form and variety so that the benefit would be more likely to reach them.
• Another lesson is that the construction of grand edifices purely for pride, ostentation, display, and the tyrannical subjugation of people is a blameworthy practice inherited from overbearing nations, as Allah said in the story of ʿĀd.
