and He has likewise permitted game taken by trained dogs and trained birds. The manner of training differs according to the species, and the scholars define the proper training of a dog as follows:
• that it dashes off when it is released;
• that it holds back when it is called off;
• and that when it seizes the prey, it does not consume any of it—because the Almighty says, “So eat of what they catch for you, and mention Allah’s name over it” (5:4), that is, pronounce His name at the moment you release them with the intention of hunting.
