• Among the foul things that are forbidden are:
• Carrion—apart from the carcasses of locusts and fish—that is, any animal that dies of itself or that is slaughtered in a way not sanctioned by the Law.
• Spilt blood, as another verse specifies. The blood that remains in the meat and veins after lawful slaughter, however, is pure and permissible.
• “And the flesh of swine, and that over which a name other than Allah has been invoked” (5:3); this includes anything sacrificed for idols, angels, human beings, jinn, or any other created being.
• Also among the foul things are every predatory beast with fangs and every bird with talons, as is confirmed by an authentic hadith of the Prophet ﷺ (1).
• From the category of carrion are:
– “the strangled,” meaning an animal choked with a rope or the like, or one that suffocates on its own;
– “the beaten to death,” namely, an animal struck with stones or a stick until it dies; this likewise applies to game hit with the flat side of an arrow and killed;
– “the fallen,” an animal that plummets from a height such as a roof or mountain and dies;
– “the gored,” one that is butted by another animal and dies from the blow;
– and any animal of which a wolf—or any other beast of prey—has eaten.
