2 – Allah, Most High, says: “Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong, the trustworthy” (al-Qasas 28:26). Joseph likewise said: “Appoint me over the storehouses of the land, for I am a reliable guardian and knowledgeable” (Yusuf 12:55).
From these two verses we learn that, in every form of hire, commissioned work, entrusted property, or public office—no matter how large or small—the person selected should combine two traits:
• the strength required for the task, meaning knowledge (1), competence, vigilance, and every auxiliary skill that enables the work to succeed;
• and, secondly, trustworthiness.
Trustworthiness engenders confidence, proving his sincerity and his readiness to fulfill what is due; competence and strength ensure that the task is carried out, completed, and perfected.
If someone who possesses both qualities in their fullest sense is found, cling to him; otherwise, make do with the best available, then the next best.
Every shortcoming that afflicts any undertaking stems from a failure to uphold these two qualities, or at least one of them (2).
