• Among the aids to patience and steadfastness is the second principle: placing one’s trust in Allah, strengthening one’s dependence upon Him, humbly imploring Him for victory, and engaging in abundant remembrance of Him. Concerning this He says, after which He makes success contingent: “And remember Allah much, so that you may prosper.” (Al-Anfāl 8:45)
He also says: “How many a small company has overcome a large company by Allah’s leave; and Allah is with those who are patient.” (Al-Baqarah 2:249)
And He says: “Many a prophet there was with whom a multitude of devout men fought; yet they neither lost heart for what befell them in Allah’s cause, nor did they weaken or give in. Allah loves those who are patient. Their only words were: ‘Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our excess in our affair, make our feet firm, and grant us victory over the disbelieving people.’ So Allah gave them the reward of this world and the excellent reward of the Hereafter.” (Āl ʿImrān 3:146-148)
He, Exalted is He, says: “O you who believe! If you support Allah”—that is, uphold His religion and the truth brought by His Messenger, sincerely seeking that the word of Allah be supreme—“He will support you and make your feet firm.” (Muḥammad 47:7)
And He says: “If Allah supports you, none can overcome you; but if He forsakes you, who then could support you after Him? So in Allah let the believers put their trust.” (Āl ʿImrān 3:160) By stating that He alone grants them victory and that no one besides Him possesses any share of it, and by commanding them to rely on Him, He has directed them to the strongest and most beneficial means in this momentous matter.
He also says: “Whoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him.” (Al-Ṭalāq 65:3) and: “Is not Allah sufficient for His servant?” (Al-Zumar 39:36)—that is, for the one who fulfills his servitude to Him. In proportion to their reliance upon Him and their fulfillment of His worship will they be granted complete victory and sufficiency.
• Another cause of victory, patience, and steadfastness is the unity of hearts and the avoidance of division and dispute, for such division dissolves strength and inevitably leads to failure, whereas a united word and mutual affection among the believers
