• After enjoining them to spend in ways that truly benefit, He forbade them to cling to wealth in ways that harm, and He made clear that two callers stand before them:
• The Caller of the All-Merciful summons them to goodness, promising bounty, reward in this world and the next, and full recompense for whatever they give.
• The caller of Satan urges them to withhold and terrifies them with poverty should they spend.
Whoever answers the Caller of the All-Merciful and spends from what Allah has granted him, let him rejoice: his sins will be forgiven and every noble aim will be attained.
But whoever responds to the caller of Satan should know that he calls only his own faction so that they may become inmates of the Blaze.
Let the servant, then, choose which of the two paths is more fitting for him.
• The verse ends with His words: “and Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing” (al-Baqarah 2:268)—meaning that His attributes are boundless and His gifts abundant. He knows who among the sincere, truthful workers deserves multiplied reward, and He knows who is worthy of it; so He grants such a person success in performing good deeds and avoiding evil ones.
