Ṣuwar min Ḥayāt al-ṢaḥābiyyātAbd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha

Umm Ḥabībah said:

When the money reached me, I sent for Abrāhah—the woman who had first brought me the glad tidings—and gave her fifty mithqāls (1) of gold, saying, “I had given you what I could when you announced the news to me, but at that time I possessed no wealth….”

It was only a short while before Abrāhah returned, handed the gold back to me, produced a small casket (2) containing the jewelry I had given her, and returned that as well. She said, “The king has insisted that I accept nothing from you, and he has ordered his womenfolk to send you everything they have of perfume.”

The following day she brought me būrus (3), aloeswood (4), and ambergris, and then she said to me:

(1) al-mithqal (the standard weight): the measure by which gold and similar items are weighed. (2) al-haqq (a vessel for perfume): indicated by the pronunciation of the letter ha with a damma. (3) al-wars: a yellow plant from which saffron is derived. (4) al-'oud: a measured dose of perfume that evaporates.
