She then said to her, “I have appointed Khālid ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ (1) to represent me, for he is the one closest to me.”

At the Negus’s palace, poised on a tree-clad hill (2) that looked out over one of Abyssinia’s verdant gardens,
in one of its spacious halls (3), embellished with vivid decorations, lit by gleaming bronze lamps (4), and furnished with sumptuous appointments, the leading Companions who were residing in Abyssinia assembled. At their head were Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib, Khālid ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ, and ʿAbd Allah ibn Ḥudhāfah al-Sahmī (5), together with others, to witness the marriage contract of Umm Ḥabībah bint Abī Sufyān to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.

ثمَّ قالت لها: لقد وكَّلت عنِّي خالد بن سعيد بن العاص (١)، فهو أقرب النَّاس إليَّ.

وفي قصر النَّجاشيِّ الرَّابض على رابيةٍ شجراء (٢) مطلَّة على روضةٍ من رياض «الحبشة» النَّضرة.
وفي أحد أبهائه (٣) الفسيحة المزدانة بالنُّقوش الزَّاهية، المضاءة بالسُّرج (٤) النُّحاسيَّة الوضَّاءة، المفروشة بفاخر الرِّياش ... اجتمع وجوه الصَّحابة المقيمين في «الحبشة»، وعلى رأسهم جعفر بن أبي طالبٍ، وخالد بن سعيد بن العاص، وعبد الله بن حذافة السَّهميُّ (٥)، وغيرهم لشهدوا عقد أمِّ حبيبة بنت أبي سفيان على رسول الله ﷺ.
