Ṣuwar min Ḥayāt al-ṢaḥābiyyātAbd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha

about the essence of their religion, what they said concerning Jesus son of Mary and his mother, and he asked them to recite for him a portion of the Qur’an that was being sent down upon the heart of their Prophet.

When they laid out the reality of Islam for him and recited some verses of the Qur’an, he wept until his beard was soaked (1) and said:

“This revelation sent to your Prophet Muhammad and the message with which Jesus son of Mary came both issue from a single lamp-niche (2).”

He then proclaimed his faith in Allah alone, without partner, and affirmed the prophethood of Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace…

He also declared his protection for every Muslim who had emigrated to his realm, even though his bishops (3) refused to accept Islam and remained upon their Christianity.

(1) Ikhaddalat lahiatuhu: his beard became wet. (2) Al-mishkāh: that on which the lamp is placed (i.e., from a single source of light). (3) Al-baṭāriqah: the plural of batarīq, meaning leader.
