Ṣuwar min Ḥayāt al-ṢaḥābiyyātAbd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha

Ramla bint Abi Sufyan

“Umm Habiba chose Allah and His Messenger above all else, and she detested the thought of returning to disbelief as much as one hates to be hurled into the Fire.” [Historians]

It never crossed the mind of Abu Sufyan ibn Harb that anyone from Quraysh could slip from under his dominion (1) or defy him in any matter of consequence (2). He was the acknowledged master of Mecca, the obeyed chief … and the leader to whom the city gave its allegiance (3).

Yet his own daughter Ramla, known by her kunya Umm Habiba, shattered (4) that assumption when she repudiated her father’s idols. She and her husband, ʿUbayd Allah ibn Jahsh, believed in Allah alone with no partner and affirmed the message of His Prophet, Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah.

Abu Sufyan marshalled every ounce of power at his disposal

(1) Opposes his authority: It contravenes his command. (2) A matter of significance: A matter of importance and prominence. (3) Al-wala: Obedience and adherence. (4) I have refuted this claim: I have nullified and dismantled it.
