Ṣuwar min Ḥayāt al-ṢaḥābiyyātAbd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha

Then the man who had struck my son stepped forward, and the Messenger ﷺ said, “This is the one who struck your son, O Umm ʿUmārah.” Without a moment’s hesitation I intercepted him and struck his leg with my sword, sending him sprawling to the ground. We closed in on him, taking turns (1) hacking at him with our swords and thrusting at him with our spears until we had dispatched him (2). The Noble Prophet ﷺ then turned to me with a smile and said, “You have exacted retribution from him, O Umm ʿUmārah. Praise be to Allah, Who granted you victory over him and allowed you to behold your vengeance with your own eyes.”

****

None of Umm ʿUmārah’s sons were any less courageous or self-sacrificing than their mother and father, nor were they surpassed by them in willingness to give their lives.

(1) Nat'awwaruh: We strike him one after another. (2) Ajhazzna 'alayh: We finished him off; we disposed of him and annihilated him.
