Ṣuwar min Ḥayāt al-ṢaḥābiyyātAbd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha

At that moment Umm ʿUmārah flung aside her water-skin and rushed into the combat like a tigress whose cubs have been threatened with harm…

But let us allow Umm ʿUmārah herself to recount those decisive moments, for no one can depict them with the same accuracy and sincerity.

Umm ʿUmārah said:
“I left for Mount Uhud at daybreak carrying a water-skin from which I gave the warriors to drink. I kept on until I reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and at that time victory and the prevailing wind (1) were with him and those who stood by his side…

“Soon, however, the Muslims broke away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and only a small band remained with him—no more than ten men…

“So my son, my husband, and I hastened toward him. We encircled him as a bracelet encircles a wrist, shielding him with every ounce of strength and with whatever weapons we possessed…"

(1) ad-dawla: victory and domination; al-reeh (wind): strength.
