Ṣuwar min Ḥayāt al-ṢaḥābiyyātAbd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha

at al-ʿAqabah in Minā the great meeting took place in secret (1) from Quraysh. Seventy-two men then stepped forward to the Prophet—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him—and, one after another, placed their hands in his, pledging to safeguard him just as they safeguarded their own wives and children. When the men had completed their pledge, two women advanced and pledged exactly what the men had pledged—but without any hand-shaking, for the Messenger ﷺ did not shake hands with women. One of those two women was known as Umm Maniʿ (2)

(1) an-nujwah: distancing oneself from the leader until one is convinced that no one will join him. (2) Umm Munai: this refers to Asma' bint Amr ibn 'Adi ibn Yasir al-Ansariya as-Salmiyya, the mother of the companion Mu'adh ibn Jabal.
