ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr took off his coat of mail, fastened the reinforced trousers around his waist, and set out for the Sacred Precinct to resume the combat, saying as he went, “Mother, do not slacken in praying for me.”
She thereupon lifted her hands toward the sky and said:
“O Allah, have mercy on the long hours he spent standing in prayer and on the intensity of his sobbing in the darkness of night while people slept …
O Allah, have mercy on his hunger and thirst beneath the scorching midday sun of Medina and Mecca while he was fasting …
O Allah, have mercy on his dutifulness toward his father and his mother …
O Allah, I have surrendered him to Your command and am content with what You have decreed for him, so reward me for him with the recompense You grant to the patient …”
The sun had not set that very day before ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr had passed on to the nearness of his Lord. And no more than a dozen days had elapsed since his death.
