I left our home with my husband(1) and our little boy, seeking infants to nurse(2) in Mecca. Several women of my tribe, the Banu Saʿd, had set out with us for the same purpose.
That was during a barren, drought-stricken year(3) that had withered the crops and destroyed the livestock, leaving us nothing.
We possessed only two scrawny, elderly mounts(4) that could not yield(5) a single drop of milk. My small son and I rode one of them, while my husband rode the other; his she-camel was the older of the two and the more emaciated.
(1) Her husband is Harith ibn Abd al-'Uzza al-Sa'di, known by his kunya as Abu Kabsha; her son’s name is Abdullah.
(2) We seek the newborn infants.
(3) Mujadaba: a land without rain or vegetation.
(4) Al-‘ajf: leanness.
(5) It does not exude: its stalks do not drip a drop of milk.
