—the hand of one of the men who were retreating, seized his spear, and tore through the ranks with it, jabbing faces with its point while roaring at the Muslims:
“Woe to you! Are you running away from the Messenger of Allah?!!”

When the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—saw her advancing, he feared she might behold her brother Ḥamzah lying slain, hideously mutilated by the idolaters(1). He therefore signaled to her son al-Zubayr, saying,
“The woman, Zubayr… the woman, Zubayr….”

Al-Zubayr hurried toward her and said, “Mother, this way—this way, Mother.”(2)

She retorted, “Stand aside—may you be bereft of your mother!”

He said, “The Messenger of Allah commands you to go back.”

She replied, “Why?! … I have been told that they have mutilated my brother, and that is for the sake of Allah….”
