As for Umm Salama, she remembered what Abu Salama had once narrated to her from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “O Allah, with You I seek reward for this calamity of mine….” Yet she could not bring herself to say, “O Allah, replace it (1) for me with something better than it,” for she kept wondering, “And who could possibly be better for me than Abu Salama?!” Nevertheless, she soon completed the supplication…

The Muslims grieved for Umm Salama’s loss as they had never grieved for anyone before… They began to call her “the Aym (2) of the Arabs,” for she had no family in Madinah except a handful of young children, as fluffy and helpless as sand-grouse chicks (3).

(1) He replaced me in it with something better than it: He compensated me with what is superior to it.
(2) al-Ayim: a woman who has lost her husband.
(3) Like the zaghab (down) of the quta: the young of the quta before its feathers have grown; the quta is a type of pigeon commonly found in the desert, its singular form being qata.
