Ṣuwar min Ḥayāt al-ṢaḥābiyyātAbd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha

For she felt its anguish more keenly and more deeply than anyone else, and no one could portray it with greater precision or eloquence.

Umm Salamah said:

When Abu Salamah resolved to depart for Medina, he saddled a camel for me, seated me upon it, placed our little boy Salamah in my lap, and set off leading the camel, turning aside for nothing (1).

Before we had even left the outskirts of Mecca (2), some men of my own clan, the Banu Makhzum, caught sight of us. They blocked our way and said to Abu Salamah, “If you have managed to get away with taking yourself, what of this woman? She is our daughter—why should we let you carry her off and roam about the land with her?”

Then they sprang at him and tore me away from him by force.

(1) It does not rest upon anything: it neither pauses at anything nor delays. (2) Before we separate from Makkah: before we depart from it.
