It is recommended to answer both the adhan and the iqama quietly, repeating each sentence in the same words, except during the hayʿala (1). At that point he says:
la ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā billāh (“There is no strength nor power except through Allah”).
When responding to the iqama he says:
aqāmahā Allāh wa adāmahā (“May Allah establish it and make it enduring”);
and when the tathwīb (2) is pronounced he says:
ṣadaqta wa bararta (“You have spoken the truth and done well”).
After the caller finishes, he invokes blessings upon the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—and then says:
Allāhumma rabba hādhihiʾd-daʿwatiʾt-tāmmah, waṣ-ṣalātiʾl-qāʾimah, ʾāti Muḥammadan al-wasīlata waʾl-faḍīlah, wabʿath-hu maqāman maḥmūdan alladhī waʿadtah (3)
“O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and of the prayer that is about to be established, grant Muhammad the means and the virtue, and raise him to the praiseworthy station You have promised him.”
Once the adhan has been given, it is unlawful for anyone already inside the mosque to leave without a valid excuse.
