Umdat at-TalibAl-Buhuti

[Description of Wuḍūʾ]

It is recommended to form the intention at the first recommended act that precedes an obligatory one. He therefore makes the intention, pronounces the basmalah, and washes his hands three times, then rinses his mouth, inhales water into his nose with his right hand and expels it with his left, three times each. He then washes his face—from the customary hairline down along the jawbones and the chin, and across the width between the two ears—making sure that water reaches the fine hairs and the outer part of any thick beard, and he runs his fingers through its inner part (1).

Next he washes his hands together with the elbows three times; a small amount of dirt beneath the nail is excused. He then wipes his head, followed by wiping his ears once (2). Thereafter he washes his feet, including the ankles, three times.

He then says, raising his gaze toward the sky:

“Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ʿabduhu wa rasuluhu” (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger) (3).

A person whose limb is amputated washes whatever remains of the portion that is obligatory (4).

(1) The original manuscript reads “wa-takhleel” (and rubbing between the fingers), whereas the present wording follows the other copies. (2) The word “yamsahu” (he wipes) is preserved from the original manuscript; it is absent from the other copies. (3) Muslim relates in his Sahih (no. 234), on the authority of Umar ibn al-Khattab—may Allah be pleased with him: “Whenever one of you performs wudu, completing it thoroughly, and then says, ‘I testify that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is the servant and Messenger of Allah,’ the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter through whichever of them he wishes.” Al-Tirmidhi (no. 55) adds: “O Allah, make me among those who constantly repent and among those who keep themselves pure.” Shaykh Ibn Baz, may Allah have mercy on him, comments: “The report that he looked toward the sky has some weakness in its chain; doing so or leaving it is therefore permissible either way.” (Margin on al-Rawd al-Murbi, 1/84). (4) Al-aqta refers to someone whose hand or leg has been amputated.
