Umdat at-TalibAl-Buhuti

Among the recommended manners are:

• Enter with the left foot first, lean on it while seated, and leave with the right foot—the opposite of what one does when entering a mosque and the like.
• Distance oneself in an open area, conceal oneself from view, and look for soft ground on which to urinate.
• When finished, wipe the penis with the left hand: from its base toward the tip three times, and likewise give it a gentle shake (1).
• Move to another spot to wash with water (istinjāʾ) if splashing is feared.

It is disliked to:

• Enter carrying something that bears Allah’s name without need,
• Raise one’s garment before nearing the ground,
• Speak while inside,
• Urinate into a crevice,
• Touch the private parts with the right hand,
• Use the right hand for cleansing without an excuse, and
• Face the sun or the moon (2).

It is unlawful to:

• Remain there longer than necessary,
• Urinate or defecate on a pathway, in beneficial shade, at a water source, or beneath a fruit-bearing tree.

One should first perform istijmār (dry cleansing with stones or the like) (3) and then wash with water; either of the two is sufficient unless the filth spreads beyond the usual exit point, in which case water becomes obligatory. Istijmār is valid only with a pure, permissible, and cleansing material, excluding bone, dung, and food.

Three cleansing wipes that remove the impurity are required, each wipe covering the entire area; if cleanliness is not achieved, more wipes are added. It is recommended to end on an odd number. Cleansing is obligatory for every substance that exits the private parts except wind, a pure substance, or anything that does not soil (4). Neither wuḍūʾ nor tayammum is valid until after this cleansing.

And His Eminence Shaykh Ibn Baz—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “The hadith is weak; nevertheless, if someone says it simply as a form of praising Allah, there is no objection, for offering thanks in this context is recommended when it is uttered to extol Allah and to thank Him for the removal of harm, even though the hadith’s chain is weak.” End of citation, marginal note on al-Rawd al-Murbiʿ (1/43). (1) In manuscript A it reads “nathrahu,” with the letter tha; the word natr denotes a forceful, abrupt pull. (2) Manuscripts B and C include the conjunction “wa” (and). (3) In manuscript C a lacuna begins here, coinciding with the opening of the chapter on tayammum. (4) That is, ritual cleansing (istinjaʾ) is not obligatory when hard, dry dung that does not soil the exit comes out, because it leaves no trace on the orifice.
