The shaykh’s method, in brief, was to fuse the wording of the commentary with that of the base text, omitting certain issues. It was first published in 1407 AH, and then re-issued in 1426 AH in four volumes.
• Shaykh Ṣāliḥ b. Ḥasan al-Buhūtī al-Azharī (d. 1121 AH) put ʿUmdat al-Ṭālib into verse—about three thousand lines—which he entitled Wasīlat al-Rāghib li-ʿUmdat al-Ṭālib. This versification remains only in manuscript form (1). It is cited by Ibn Ḥumayd in al-Saḥb al-Wābila (2/426), by Ibn Ḥumayd the grandson in al-Durr al-Munḍad (p. 60), by Ibn Ḥamdan in Kashf al-Niqāb (p. 145), and by Dr. Bakr Abū Zayd in al-Madkhal al-Mufaṣṣal (2/797). Ibn Ḥumayd described it as weak poetry.
