[On fighting rebellious factions]
The imam must first correspond with the rebels, dispelling their doubts. If they relent, so be it; otherwise he fights them, and his subjects are obliged to aid him. If two groups fight one another out of tribal partisanship or a contest for leadership, both are aggressors; each party is liable for whatever it has destroyed of the other’s property.

[The ruling on the apostate]
Whoever associates partners with Allah Most High; denies His Lordship, His oneness, or any of His attributes; claims that He has a consort or a child; rejects any of His scriptures or messengers; denies the prohibition of fornication and similar acts; declares wine and the like to be lawful; or repudiates any ruling that is plainly established by consensus—after being informed of the truth yet persisting—has fallen into unbelief. He is invited to repent three times while placed under restriction; if he does not repent he is executed by the sword.
The repentance of such a person, indeed of any unbeliever, is to utter the two testimonies of faith. It is not accepted(1) from one who has reviled Allah or whose apostasy has recurred. Anyone who had denied an obligation or the like must, together with the two testimonies, explicitly affirm that obligation, or say: “I disavow every religion that contradicts the religion of Islam.”
