Whoever may lawfully be subjected to retaliation for taking a life together with others may likewise be subjected to it for a lesser injury. Hence an eye, nose, ear, tooth, eyelid, lip, hand, foot, finger, phalange, penis, testicle, or buttock is taken for its counterpart, provided there is no excess and full parity is secured in name, location, soundness, and completeness: no right limb is taken for a left, no sound limb for a paralysed one, and no healthy eye for a blind eye.
Retaliation is also exacted for every wound that reaches the bone—such as a muḍīḥa (a head wound that exposes bone), a wound of the upper arm, leg, or thigh, and the breaking of a tooth—but not for a hāshima (one that crushes bone), a jāʾifa (a penetrating wound of the torso), and the like.
If several people inflict a single injury and their individual actions cannot be distinguished, each of them has the corresponding member severed.
Any subsequent spread of the injury—whether it leads to death or to something less—is guaranteed, either by retaliation or by blood money, except for the spread that results from the execution of retaliation itself.
No retaliation is carried out for a limb or a wound until it has healed, nor may its blood money be claimed beforehand; should one nonetheless proceed before healing is complete, any ensuing spread is disregarded.
