Umdat at-TalibAl-Buhuti

She may leave the house during the daytime solely to attend to her necessities (1). If she neglects the mourning observance she is at fault, and the waiting period ends with the mere passage of its set time.

Section: Istibrāʾ (the clearance period for a slave woman’s womb)

Whoever comes to own a female slave of an age normally eligible for intercourse—even if he acquired her from a woman or from a minor (2)—is forbidden to have intercourse with her, or to engage in its preliminaries, until he has completed her istibrāʾ.

Istibrāʾ is fulfilled for a pregnant woman by her delivery; for a woman who menstruates, by one menstrual cycle; and for a pre-pubescent girl or a post-menopausal woman, by one lunar month.

(1) The omission in manuscript A ends here. (2) Manuscript C reads: “or small.”
