He should also allow the bride the customary period of grace if she asks for it, though not for assembling her trousseau or the like. A slave-girl is to be handed over only at night, and he may take his pleasure with her as long as that does not distract her from an obligation or cause her harm. At the moment of intercourse he should say:

“In the name of Allah. O Allah, keep Satan away from us and keep Satan away from whatever You provide for us.” (1)

He may travel with a free wife who has not stipulated that she remain in her own town. Intercourse is forbidden during menstruation and through the anus. He may compel her to perform the ritual bath after menstruation and after major impurity, and to remove any repulsive hair or the like.

Upon her request, he must spend one night out of every four with a free wife and one night out of every seven with a slave-wife, and he is free in his use of the remaining nights. If able, he is obliged to have intercourse at least once every four months; should he travel for more than half of that period and she ask him to return and he is able, he must comply, and if he refuses, a separation is granted at her request. Excessive conversation during intercourse is discouraged, as is withdrawing before she has reached completion.

It is unlawful to house two or more wives in the same dwelling without their consent. He may forbid her to leave the house, though granting permission is recommended if one of her maḥram relatives is ill or dies. He may likewise prevent her from breast-feeding a child of hers by another man, unless it is indispensable for the child.

O Allah, keep Satan away from us and keep Satan away from what You grant us; then, if they are granted a child, Satan will not harm that child.”

دارها، وَيمهل مستمهل العادة لا لعمل جهاز ونحوه، وتُسَلَّمُ أمةٌ ليلًا فقط، وَلهُ الإستمتاع بها ما لم يشغلها عن واجب أو يضرها. ويقول عندَ وَطْء: "بسم الله، اللَّهم جَنَّبْنَا الشيطان وجَنِّب الشيطانَ ما رَزَقْتَنَا" (١) . وله السفر بِحُرَّةٍ لم تشترط بلدها. ويحرم وطءٌ في حيض وُدبرٍ، وله إجبارُها على غُسلِ حيضٍ وجَنَابة، وأخذِ ما يُعاف من شعرٍ ونحوه. فصلٌ يَلْزَمُ بطلبٍ مبيتُ ليلةٍ من أربع عند حرة، ومِن سبعٍ عند أمة، وله الإنفراد في الباقي. ويلزمه وطءٌ إن قَدِرَ كُلَّ ثُلُثِ سنةٍ مَرَةً، وإِنْ سَافَرَ فَوْقَ نصفها وطلبت قُدُومَه وقَدِرَ لَزِمَه، فإن أبي ذلك فُرّق بينهما بطلبها. ويُكره كثرةُ كلامٍ حال جماع، ونزعُه قَبل فراغها. وَيحْرُمُ جمعُ زوجتين فأكثر بمسكنٍ بغير رضاهما، وله منعها من خروج، وسُن إذنه إن مَرِضَ محرمها، أو مات، وَله منعها من رضاعِ وَلَدِهَا مِنْ غيره إلا لضرورته.
