Previous Editions of the Book
The work “ʿUmdat al-Ṭālib” was issued as an independent volume on two occasions:
First: Edited by Shaykh Ahmad ibn Salih al-Tuwayyan; published by Dar Tuwayq in 1418 AH, and reprinted in 1425 AH.
Second: Edited by Dr. ʿAbd al-Salam ibn Dahish; published by Maktabat al-Asadi in 1425 AH.
Although the two editors are to be thanked for the considerable effort they invested, both printings are nevertheless not free from errors and critical remarks (1). Some of these remarks are common to both editions, while others are unique to each. Among them are the following:
- In both editions the verification relied on a single manuscript of the book, copied in 1142 AH (2), even though earlier manuscripts are available.
- Neither edition makes any mention—direct or indirect—of the manuscript’s details or provenance; instead, the editors merely included a facsimile of the manuscript in the introduction.
(1) The Dar Tuwaiq edition was taken as the base text; its pagination appears at the top of the pages in Dr. Abd Allah al-Turki’s edition of Hidayat al-Raghib. Although Dr. al-Turki corrected a number of errors, many still remain.
(2) This is the manuscript identified in our edition by the siglum (A).
طَبَعَاتُ الكتابِ السَّابِقة
طُبع كتاب
"عمدة الطالب"
مُفرداً مرتين:
الأولى:
بتحقيق الشيخ أحمد بن صالح الطويان، طَبَعَتْه دار طويق في عام ١٤١٨ هـ، ثم أُعيد طَبْعُه مرة ثانية عام ١٤٢٥ هـ.
الثانية:
بتحقيق الدكتور عبد السلام بن دهيش، طَبَعَتْه مكتبة الأسدي عام ١٤٢٥ هـ.
ومع ما بُذِل في هاتين الطبعتين مِن جُهدٍ يُشكر عليه المُحقِّقان، إلَّا أن هاتين الطبعتين لم تسلما من الأخطاء والملاحظات

، وقد اشتركتا في بعض الملاحظات، وانفردت كلُّ واحدةٍ منهما في ملاحظات،
ومن هذه الملاحظات:
* أنه في كلا الطبعتين قَدِ اعْتُمِدَ في التحقيق على مخطوطةٍ واحدةٍ للكتاب، نُسخت سنة ١١٤٢ هـ

، رغم وجود مخطوطات أخرى له أقدم منها.
* لم تتم الإشارة في الطبعتين إلى بيانات المخطوط ولا إلى مصدره، لا من قريب ولا من بعيدٍ، وإنما اكتُفي بوضع صورةٍ للمخطوط في المقدمة.
(١) وقد اعتُمدت طبعة دار طويق بأن وُضعت في أعلى صفحات كتاب "هداية الراغب" في طبعة الدكتور عبد الله التركي، وقد حاول الدكتور تصحيح عدد من الأخطاء، ولكن ما زال هناك الكثير من الأخطاء لم يُصَحح.
