the later Ḥanbalī writings, as the historian ʿUthmān ibn Bishr (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“Shaykh al-Qāḍī ʿUthmān ibn Manṣūr al-Ḥanbalī al-Nāṣirī—may Allah preserve him—told me that some of his teachers had reported from their own teachers who said: ‘All the marginal notes composed by the later Ḥanbalīs on those basic texts are of little authority, except for what Shaykh Manṣūr wrote, for he alone verified them. The only other exception is the marginalia of al-Khalwatī, because it contains significant benefits.’” (1)
The works of this eminent scholar are as follows (2):
1 – Irshād Uli al-Nuhā li Daqāʾiq al-Muntahā (Guidance for the Discerning to the Subtleties of “Al-Muntahā”)—a marginal commentary on “Muntahā al-Irādāt” (3); he completed it in 1036 AH, and it appears to have been the Shaykh’s first composition.
2 – A marginal commentary on Al-Iqnāʿ (4), completed in 1040 AH.
3 – Iʿlām al-Aʿlām bi-Qitāl Man Intahaka Ḥurmata al-Bayt al-Ḥarām (Informing the Notables of the Obligation to Fight Those Who Violate the Sanctity of the Sacred House) (5), completed in 1041 AH.
4 – Al-Rawḍ al-Murbiʿ Sharḥ Zād al-Mustaqniʿ (The Verdant Meadow: A Commentary on “Zād al-Mustaqniʿ”) (6), finished in 1043 AH.
5 – Kashshāf al-Qināʿ ʿan Matn al-Iqnāʿ (Unveiling the Veil from the Text of “Al-Iqnāʿ”) (7), an extensive commentary on the book “Al-Iqnāʿ.”
