The uḍḥiyah is a recommended Sunnah, and slaughtering the animal itself is superior to giving its monetary value in charity. One should divide the meat into three equal parts: eat a third, give a third as gifts, and donate a third in charity. Giving away roughly one uqiyyah of the meat suffices (1); whoever neglects to do so is liable for it (2).
Once the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah begin, it is forbidden for the person offering the sacrifice—and for the one on whose behalf it is offered—to cut any of their hair or nails until the slaughter is complete.
Section: ʿAqīqah
The recommended ʿaqīqah is two sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl. It should be slaughtered on the seventh day, and on that day the child is to be given a good name. If the seventh day is missed, it is done on the fourteenth (3); if that is missed, then on the twenty-first.
The bones are to be separated joint by joint (4) without breaking them, and part of it should be prepared with something sweet (5). In its rulings it is like the uḍḥiyah, except that partnership in a single animal is not valid (6).
