Umdat at-TalibAl-Buhuti

Chapter
[Entering Mecca]
It is recommended to enter Mecca during daylight, coming from its upper approach, and to enter the Sacred Mosque through the Banu Shaybah Gate.

When he sees the House, he raises his hands and says:

“O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes peace; keep us alive, our Lord, in peace.”(1)

“O Allah, increase this House in exaltation, honour, dignity, awe, and goodness, and likewise increase in exaltation, honour, dignity, awe, and goodness those who magnify and ennoble it—among those who perform its ḥajj and ʿumrah.”(2)

(3)

“Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, as He deserves and as befits the generosity of His countenance and the majesty of His might; praise be to Allah who has enabled me to reach His House and deemed me worthy of it; praise be to Allah in every circumstance. O Allah, You have called to(4) the pilgrimage of Your inviolable House and I have come in response. O Allah, accept this from me, pardon me, and set right all of my affairs. There is no deity but You.”

He raises his voice with these words.

He then performs ṭawāf with his right shoulder uncovered (iḍṭibāʿ). The pilgrim performing tamattuʿ begins with the ṭawāf of ʿumrah, whereas others begin with the ṭawāf of arrival.

(1) Reported by Ibn Abi Shayba, al-Musannaf, 8/766, no. 16000, as a mawquf narration from ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him. It is likewise transmitted by Ibn Abi Shayba, 8/765, no. 15998, and by Imam al-Shafiʿi, Musnad, 2/251, no. 949 (Sanjar’s ordering), from Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib—may Allah have mercy on him—who, whenever he looked at the House, would say: “O Allah, You are al-Salaam…,” and so forth. (2) The phrase “and increase the honour and nobility of all those who magnify and venerate it, of those who perform hajj or ʿumra, granting them still greater honour, reverence, awe and beneficence” is absent from manuscript A. (3) Related by Imam al-Shafiʿi, Musnad, 2/250, no. 948 (Sanjar’s ordering), through Ibn Jurayj from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him; and by Ibn Abi Shayba, al-Musannaf, 8/765, no. 15999, through Makhul from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. (4) The preposition ila (“to”) is not found in manuscript A.
