The Text of “ʿUmdat al-Ṭālib” and Its Significance
This work is a concise juristic primer in the fiqh of Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal—may Allah have mercy on him. Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir ibn Badrān—may Allah have mercy on him—said of it, “A fine abridgment by Shaykh Manṣūr al-Buhūtī, prepared for beginners.” (1)
Whoever examines the book will see that its importance rests on the following points:
-
The lofty standing of its author in the school. In his day he was the leading shaykh of the madhhab and the last of its critical scholars, as will be shown in his biography.
-
This was the final book Shaykh Manṣūr authored. Only seven months separate its completion from his death: he finished it in Shawwāl 1050 AH and passed away in Rabīʿ al-Thānī 1051 AH. He composed it after commenting on the authoritative works of the school—he produced a commentary and marginal notes on al-Iqnāʿ, a commentary and marginal notes on al-Muntahā, an explanation of Naẓm al-Mufradāt, and an explanation of Zād al-Mustaqniʿ. Having done so, he penned this primer, depositing in it the distilled essence of his jurisprudence, critical verification, and long experience in the Ḥanbalī school. It thus emerged as a precious pearl, a rare ruby adorning the necklace of Ḥanbalī fiqh.

The book’s importance is further attested by the attention scholars have devoted to it and by their reading and teaching of it.
