Move your heart wherever you please in love—
true love belongs only to the first beloved.
How many dwellings on earth a youth may grow fond of,
yet his longing is always for the very first home. (1)
And this bond (2) is the one that benefits the servant; nothing else will help him in the three abodes—namely, the abode of this world, the barzakh (intermediate realm), and the abode of permanence. He has no stability, no life, no bliss, and no success except through this bond. It is the cord that links the servant to Allah. The poet spoke well when he said (3):
If the rope of union between them is cut,
lovers still possess a rope that never snaps;
and if the fabric of their togetherness should tear,
lovers yet have a bond that can never be rent. (4)
In short, on the Day of Resurrection Allah, exalted is He, will sever every cause, attachment, and tie that existed among people in this world; nothing will remain except the cause and the connection that binds the servant to his Lord alone—namely, the tie of servitude.
