benefit that reaches him from people is in reality good for him, even though on the surface it may appear to be evil.(1) It springs(2) from carrying out(3) the duty of enjoining what is right,(4) and from such a source nothing issues but good, even if it first arrives in the guise of harm and hardship; as the Exalted says: “Those who came with the slander are but a band of your own people. Do not think it bad for you; rather, it is good for you” (Qur’an 24:11).(5) He also said to His Prophet: “So pardon them, seek forgiveness for them, and consult them in the matter. Then, once you have resolved, put your trust in Allah” (Qur’an 3:159).(6)
These words encompass concern for both the right of Allah and the right of His creatures: people may offend either against Allah or against His Messenger. If they wrong you, meet that with your pardon of them; and if they wrong Me, then ask Me to forgive them and win their hearts. Draw out whatever opinion they possess by consulting them, for that is more likely to win their obedience and elicit their sincere counsel.(7) Once you have resolved upon a matter,(8) there is no consultation thereafter; rather, rely upon Allah,(9) and proceed with what you have determined,(10) for Allah loves those who place their trust in Him.
