Two points to note:
It should be understood that:
- Among the forms of apostasy mentioned above, some admit of no excuse, such as denying Allah’s existence or rejecting the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) as untruthful. An individual thereby becomes a disbeliever in every case, because what he has denied is among the most fundamental, self-evident truths.
Others may admit an excuse on grounds of ignorance or interpretation, such as denying something of the reports or laws brought by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). An individual does not thereby become a disbeliever until the proof has been established against him, since there may be circumstances that led him to deny it, such as the evidence being unclear to him.
- Whoever outwardly manifests any of the forms of apostasy mentioned above—whether seriously, in jest, to ingratiate himself with others, or out of obstinacy in a dispute—that is, without being coerced—thereby becomes a disbeliever, for Allah Most High says:
“Whoever disbelieves in Allah after having believed—except one who is compelled while his heart remains firm in faith—but those who willingly embrace disbelief will incur Allah’s wrath, and theirs will be a tremendous punishment.” [al-Nahl: 106] (1).
(1) The author stated in al-Sharh (The Commentary): “Whoever utters words of disbelief willingly, without coercion, has opened his heart to disbelief, because he has willingly spoken words of disbelief or committed an act of disbelief. This can only occur when the heart is receptive to disbelief. Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah ~ drew attention to this.”
