Jawab fi al-Iman wa NawaqidihAbd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak

And the hadith of Buraydah ibn al-Husayb, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Indeed, the covenant between us and them is prayer; whoever abandons it = has disbelieved.”

Reported by the compilers of the Sunan collections (1).

  • As for all other obligations beyond the five pillars of Islam, Ahl al-Sunnah agree that fulfilling them is a condition for the perfection of a person’s faith, while neglecting them is a sin that does not take him outside the fold of faith.

It should be understood that “condition” here is intended in its broader sense: that on which the very existence of a thing depends, whether it is an integral part of that thing or external to it. Thus, whatever is described here as a condition for faith = is itself part of faith (2).

All these distinctions accord with the doctrine of Ahl al-Sunnah

(1) Al-Tirmidhī (2621), who graded it “hasan sahīh gharīb (good, authentic, and solitary)”; al-Nasā’ī (470); and Ibn Mājah (1079). It was authenticated by Ibn Hibbān (1454) and al-Hākim in al-Mustadrak (11). Ibn Taymiyyah, in Sharh al-ʿUmdah, 2/65, and Ibn al-Qayyim, in al-Salāh, p. 68, stated that it “meets Muslim’s criteria.” A number of later scholars also authenticated it. (2) The author uses “condition” (shart) to encompass both a condition and an integral element (rukn), since both are indispensable to the existence of a thing’s essence. An integral element, however, forms part of that essence, as bowing does in prayer, whereas a condition is external to it, as ablution is to prayer. See Jāmiʿ al-Masā’il, 3/317, and Sharh Mukhtasar al-Rawdah, 3/227.
