refraining from prohibited and disliked deeds, and acknowledging the lawful as lawful and the unlawful as unlawful (1).
These obligations and prohibitions—indeed, recommended and disliked deeds as well—vary greatly in degree.
Thus = it becomes clear that it is incorrect to state without qualification that action is a condition for the validity or perfection of faith. Rather, this requires a detailed distinction: the term “action” encompasses deeds of the heart and deeds of the limbs; it includes both doing and refraining, the obligations constituting the five pillars of Islam and lesser obligations, and abstaining from associating partners with Allah, disbelief, and lesser sins.
- As for abstaining from associating partners with Allah and all forms of disbelief, and disavowing them, this is a condition for the validity of faith: faith cannot exist without it.

وتركُ المحرماتِ والمكروهاتِ، وإحلالُ الحلالِ وتحريمُ الحرامِ (١).
وهذه الواجباتُ والمحرماتُ؛ بل والمستحباتُ والمكروهاتُ؛ على درجات متفاوتة تفاوتًا كثيرًا.
وبهذا= يتبيَّنُ أنه لا يصحُ إطلاقُ القولِ بأنَّ العملَ شرطُ صحةٍ أو شرطُ كمالٍ؛ بل يحتاجُ إلى تفصيل؛ فإنَّ اسمَ «العملِ» يشملُ: عملَ القلبِ وعملَ الجوارحِ، ويشملُ الفعلَ والتركَ، ويشملُ الواجباتِ التي هي أصولُ الإسلامِ الخمسةِ وما دونها، ويشملُ تركَ الشركِ والكفرِ وما دونهما من الذنوب.
- فأمَّا تركُ الشركِ وأنواعِ الكفرِ والبراءةُ منها؛ فهو شرطُ صحةٍ لا يتحقق الإيمان إلا به.
