Moreover, performing witr at the end of the night is the very tahajjud that Allah mentions in His Noble Book, for tahajjud is valid only after one has slept. It coincides with the time of the nashiʾah about which the Exalted said: “Indeed, the arising at night is most effective for disciplining the soul and best for words to be recited” (6) [al-Muzzammil]; the nashiʾah occurs only after a period of rest.

  1. As for the person who fears that he will not rise toward the end of the night, he should perform witr before going to sleep, based on the hadith of Abu Hurayrah: “My close friend, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), enjoined three things upon me,” one of which was “that I pray witr before I sleep.” Abu Hurayrah used to occupy the early night with studying and memorising hadith, and he was among those who would not wake until after dawn had broken, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) advised him to offer witr before sleeping. The same ruling applies to Abu Hurayrah and to anyone in a similar situation.
