Benefits:
-
Witr is not prescribed to be performed in congregation, except when it comes after the tarāwīḥ prayer.
-
Shaykh al-Islām stated: “Witr surpasses all voluntary prayers offered in the daytime. Accordingly, the finest prayer after the obligatory ones is the night vigil (qiyām al-layl), and the most emphatic prayer after witr is the two-rakʿah Sunnah of Fajr.”
-
The scholars are unanimously agreed that the time for witr does not begin until after the ʿIshāʾ prayer. It may be prayed before the Sunnah of ʿIshāʾ, though that is less preferable. If ʿIshāʾ is offered early by combining it with Maghrib, Abū Ḥanīfah maintained that the time for witr has not yet entered, because he held that it begins only after the disappearance of the red twilight. The majority, however, differ with him, holding that the time for witr begins once ʿIshāʾ has been performed, even when it has been brought forward and combined with Maghrib.
