Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

271 – On the authority of al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If one of you is in doubt, and he has already stood up for the two rakʿahs, then completes his standing, let him proceed and perform two prostrations (of forgetfulness). But if he has not yet become fully upright, let him sit back down, and no prostration of forgetfulness is required of him.”
It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, and al-Dāraqutnī—the wording being that of al-Dāraqutnī—with a weak chain of transmission. (1)

Degree of authenticity:
The ḥadīth is sound and reaches us through three routes:

  1. Al-Tirmidhī transmitted it through al-Masʿūdī, from Ziyād ibn ʿIlāqah, from al-Mughīrah. Al-Tirmidhī said, “This ḥadīth is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (sound and authentic).”
  2. Al-Tirmidhī also transmitted it through Muḥammad ibn Abī Laylā, from al-Shaʿbī, from al-Mughīrah. Aḥmad said, “The ḥadīth of Ibn Abī Laylā is not reliable.”
  3. Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, and al-Dāraqutnī produced it through Jābir al-Juʿfī, from al-Mughīrah ibn Shubayl, from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, from al-Mughīrah.
Jābir al-Juʿfī is extremely weak; al-Tirmidhī said that Yaḥyā ibn Saʿd and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī abandoned his narrations. Nevertheless, he is supported by the corroborating reports of Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ and Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān from Ibn Shubayl, whose chain is authentic.
Al-Albānī concluded: “In sum, with these routes and supporting narrations the ḥadīth…"
