267 – ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “The Prophet ﷺ led them in prayer; he made an error, so he performed two prostrations, then recited the tashahhud, and afterward gave the salām.” Related by Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī—who graded it ḥasan—and al-Ḥākim, who declared it ṣaḥīḥ. Hadith grading
The report is classified as irregular (shādh).
Abū Dāwūd transmitted it and remained silent about it; al-Tirmidhī said, “ḥasan, gharīb, ṣaḥīḥ”; al-Ḥākim judged it “ṣaḥīḥ according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, although they did not include it,” and al-Dhahabī concurred. Al-Ḥāzimī likewise authenticated it in al-Iʿtibār.
As for the wording “then he recited the tashahhud,” Ibn Sīrīn said, “I have not heard any mention of the tashahhud,” and al-Bayhaqī and Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr declared it weak. Ibn al-Mundhir remarked, “I do not think the tashahhud in the prostration of forgetfulness is established.” Many later scholars state that the report contains no reference to the tashahhud at all; the phrase is transmitted only by Ashʿath ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Ḥamrānī, who contradicts other reliable narrators, rendering it irregular.
Vocabulary
• fa-sahā: It is said “sahā ʿan al-shayʾ yasshū sahwan,” meaning “he was heedless of something.” Al-Miṣbāḥ distinguishes between a sāhī (one who is heedless) and a nāsī (one who forgets): when reminded, the nāsī remembers, whereas the sāhī does not necessarily do so.
Points derived from the hadith
1 – This narration is one version of the previously cited “hadith of Dhū al-Yadayn.” It is the version recorded by the compilers of the Sunan. The narrator who reports from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn was asked, “Did he give the salām after the lapse?” He replied, “I did not preserve that from Abū Hurayrah, but
