Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

262 – Malik ibn al-Huwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Pray as you have seen me pray.” Recorded by al-Bukhari (1).

Takeaways from the ḥadith:

1 – The ḥadith establishes two great foundational principles:
• First principle: The Prophet’s ﷺ actions and words in prayer clarify what the Quran and other noble ḥadiths mention only in summary form.
• Second principle: It is obligatory for people to follow him ﷺ in whatever he did during the prayer. Every practice and utterance that he consistently observed becomes binding upon the ummah, unless there is specific evidence to exempt a particular matter.
This second principle would stand unchallenged were it not for the ḥadith of the man who prayed poorly, about which the scholars have said: any rulings of prayer that are not mentioned therein are not obligatory unless proven by particular evidence. Accordingly, regarding the ḥadith of Malik ibn al-Huwayrith—“Pray as you have seen me pray”—whatever the command is intended as obligatory must in fact be observed, and whatever it is intended as recommended remains recommended. Thus the ḥadith affirms the Prophet’s ﷺ unrestricted legislative authority.

3 – The prayer performed by the Prophet ﷺ is the most complete and perfect form of prayer. Whoever models his prayer on it has perfected his own worship and fulfilled his duty to his Lord. Since the Muslim is commanded to emulate the Prophet ﷺ in his prayer, this is only possible by learning how he prayed; therefore, it is incumbent to study the Prophet’s ﷺ manner of prayer.

4 – One must give the prayer due care and attention, perform it proficiently, and strive for excellence in it; for he ﷺ is
